Years Go By

This is a poem I wrote on January 5, 2009, and it's from the point of view of a parent who has watched their child grow up.

Cries of a newborn fill the room
You marvel at this new life you have created
Those early weeks and months seem like such work
But they go by faster than you realize
And before you know it,
The child is walking and talking
And peace of mind all but disappears
More time goes by, and the child goes off to school
And you watch the child learn and grow even more
Then the pre-teen and teen years come rushing in
Sooner than you think they will
And you hope you don't lose your mind in the process
One day, your child becomes an adult
And is ready to face the world on their own
And as you look back over the years that have gone by
You realize that you did the best job you knew how to do
To help that child become the person they are today
