Test Of Truth

I originally wrote this poem in the early 1990s. When I re-read the poem a few years back, I wasn't happy with how it had turned out. I wrote this version of the poem on December 7, 2009, and it's from the point of view of a speaker who doubts the sincerity of a relationship.

Once upon a  time, I believed everything you said
I never thought you made any of it up in your head
But friends soon started planting seeds of doubt
And now I need to find out what you're all about

And now I have a test of truth that you need to pass
In order to prove to me our relationship will last
And if you fail, it will mean the end
And I will always wonder if you were my friend
