Desperate Dependence

This is a poem I wrote back in 1992 or 1993, during my senior year of high school. It's from the point of view of a speaker wishing that someone they know who has low self-esteem can find some self-confidence.


She thinks she can't
Stand on her own
She thinks she needs him
To prop her up
And that she is nothing
Without him
She has no sense of identity
She has no sense of purpose
Without him
In her life
I wish she'd find the strength
And the courage
To realize she's better off
Without him
And that she is
Someone special
Deep down inside
